Celebrate the Award

The year is 2009 though 😉

Now that’s a nice present from all you drum & bass heads! Thanks to your votes we won the future-music.net award for the best national release in 2009! I can’t believe we got more votes than Bassface Sascha, Phace, Syncopix or Polarity! But obviously you could share our vision of how a party drum & bass track should roll. Or in the words of Dogs on Acid’s khal:
“The two of these tunes are not your garden-variety Drum & Bass – these tracks take you back to the old school, where the doors of influence were wide open, and worn on our sleeves. When will more producers see that the beauty of Drum & Bass was when we explored outside of the scene, not regurgitating what’s already been done?”
Thanks again for all your support! And if you don’t have this record yet, you can get it on vinyl or mp3 at the santorin webshop.

“Bei aktuellem Drum & Bass steht immer eine Musik im Vordergrund, darum ist Pendulum so big: das lauteste Element in ihren Tracks sind die Melodien. Darum gefällt mir, so seltsam das klingen mag, derzeit auch Jump Up am besten, denn dieser Sound ist noch real: über fetten Drums liegt eine Bassline, die zum Hauptelement wird und zugleich auch die Melodie transportiert.”

After some confusion that caused a long summer-break, we are finally back with our monthly session. On the best soundsystem in town we bring you totally un-stiff party drum&bass every first friday of the month.
We restart with our favourite german jumpup hero DJ Connecta from Mannheim. So maybe the liquid heads and the neurodudes have to jump over their shadow, but the rest will totally rinse out 😉 Hope to see you there!

Biggup the magazine Massive for bringing together the german scene together again! Some years have passed since the first steps to establish a connection between all the different crews, producers and djs. The first meetings (Rotation in 99, broken beatz festival in 02, an Made in Germany in 03) all started promising, but now is the time to push things even further. The joint starts on June 2nd at Maria am Ostbahnhof / Berlin.

It’s been a busy winter, so no posts for a long time. But Mr. Matik from the lovely Subsonic Pressure Crew just sent me this video and woke me up from my blogsleep (hopefully).
Although I don’t share the common Noisia hype (not enough soul for me ;)) this work is ingenious:

When somebody tells you how bad it feels to become 30, don’t believe it. Just invite your friends, throw in some music and dance all night long. This is what I did and I still can’t believe how great this night was.
Although the location was a little punked up in the daylight, as soon as it turned dark and the soundsystem started pumpin’, it was drum & bass heaven. I got the coolest presents (see the pictures to find some) and the DJs that supported me from Day 1 like the Phoneheads, The Green Man, J-Cut and Ames made the crowd scream for more. Simon V even brought me a Birthday Drum & Bass Track, I will upload it later…
So thanks to everybody who celebrated with us, I’m still smiling all day long because of this great night.

And here to listen to the sweet birthday anthem by Simon V…

Just a short reminder for all of you who don’t get our PLAY!-Spam:
My birthday-rinseout starts on 9.9.06 at 22h. Come to the Kolbhalle / Helmholtzstraße 8-32 in Köln Ehrenfeld and be prepared to get your ass kicked by my buddies Phoneheads, The Green Man, J-Cut, Ames & Sektion Bewegtbild! Plus we got the fattest soundsystem around (Meyersound from Lightwave / Overath) and besides some classic d&b tunes Mr. Scheibenreiter & J-Cut will also spin some deep Dubstep.

Seems like this fall will be a hot one: I finally turn 30 and seriously hope to grow up then. And since my birthday even is on a saturday I took the chance to invite all my friends and musical father-figures to rock the party at the Kolbhalle. The Phoneheads, The Green Man, J-Cut, Ames and Sektion Bewegtbild will provide some classic tunes & videos from the last 10 years.
One week later we start a new series of parties at the good ol’ Studio 674. For more than 60 years the friday was totally into Kompakt‘s hands and techno was the only sound allowed in those holy halls. But after a testrun this summer, we figured out how fat the soundsystem is and how well it plays our beloved basslines. Starting with the drum & bass bundesliga we will host parties with mostly german acts and try to put an end to the booking-cold-war that raged in the last years in Cologne. We will show you that it’s not always about the big names and we’ll continue to support the german scene as much as possible…

Without mentioning the not so good things (playing in an un-crowded club in Berlin on friday or stopping an open air party on saturday early because nobody found the location) I will focus on the positive things that happened 😉
Meeting MC Santana and his sweet family was a clear highlight. He played his soon-to-be-released album “Clockwork Dark” to me and I was really amazed. First I thought of dark terror-beats when I saw the cover, but once the record played, it all turned out PHAT! Downtempo Hip-Hop beats meet Santana’s great voice. Think of RJD2 meeting MC Dynamite… Hope I can link some snippets of his album soon, it should be out in august/september.

Please, spread the word!
(For non-germans: Beckmann is the worst sports-commentator ever heard on german TV. We havt to stop him from commenting the finals!)

OLEEE, OOOOOOOLEEEEEE, OLEEE, OOOOOOOLEEEEEE!
1. FCDNB KOMPRESSOR KÖLN IS CHAMPION OF THE GERMAN DRUM & BASS BUNDESLIGA 2006!
MC DOUBLE J & KOLT SIEWERTS SWEPT WERDER BREMEN FROM THE FIELD & BROUGHT THE CUP TO COLOGNE!
Alright alright, ‘nough of the bold screaming, but I’m still high on adrenaline after the breathtaking final last night in Braunschweig…
Man, that was my first real DJ-battle ever and we just won the fuckin championchip! Dirk D. & MC Temper from FC Werder One Nation Bremen were real tough to crack, but in the end Double J & me definitively shot more goals than them and took home the cup.
I learned the rules for the final in my car, 1 1/2 hours before the show and was not quite prepared. I thought every team had 45mins to play their set, but President Lyde Buddah spontaneously changed the rules a bit. The timetable was:
1) DJ without MC: 25 minutes each
2) MC acapella: 1 minute each
3) DJ & MC together for 25 minutes.
After each round the crowd was asked to scream for the team who they thought were the best. We clearly won round 1 & 2, the decision in round 3 was not made because it was so close and we had won the championship anyway…
Now we have this pimpin big championchip cup and we are proud like oskar to have battled out all those strong teams. Biggup to all the crowd who supported us in Braunschweig and of course the dons Lyda Buddah and mystic Mystic Dan, who is one of the best german ragga / drum & bass MCs I know!
More pics & maybe my winning set soon…
